Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recounted his early struggles to connect with TSMC founder Morris Chang in the late 1990s as Nvidia sought a manufacturer for its graphics chips. Ultimately, TSMC’s commitment to partnership led to a long-term collaboration. TSMC now manufactures Nvidia's advanced AI chips and reported a record $23.5 billion Q3 profit.

Long before Nvidia became synonymous with artificial intelligence and dominated the global chip industry, its founder and CEO Jensen Huang was a startup leader struggling to get noticed by manufacturers. In a recent conversation released Wednesday with podcaster Lex Fridman, Huang shared how, in the late 1990s, Nvidia was racing to find a partner that could produce its graphics chips. Back then, foundry capacity was scarce, and some manufacturers required technology licensing agreements simply for access. Huang saw an opportunity in Taiwan's TSMC, a much smaller firm at the time, though it lacked the size and reach of the chipmaking giant it is today.Huang recounted starting his search for chip production by looking up TSMC’s US office in the Yellow Pages, the standard telephone directory of the era. His first calls went unanswered; instead of reaching a live person, Huang found himself leaving messages, outlining what Nvidia was building and hoping for a callback. “Nobody called me. Nobody called me back,” he told Fridman, underscoring the uphill battle his young company faced. Resorting to a more personal approach, Huang eventually drafted a lengthy letter to TSMC founder Morris Chang. Weeks went by in silence until, one evening, his persistence paid off. “‘This is Morris Chang from TSMC,’” said the caller, according to Huang. At the time, Nvidia employees were playing video games nearby, and the CEO urged them to quiet down so he could take the important call.Huang was relieved that Chang had responded, telling his team, “Maybe we won’t have to die.” Chang invited Huang to Taiwan, where he toured both TSMC and rival United Microelectronics Corp. Impressed by both, Huang ultimately chose TSMC, citing Chang’s emphasis on integrity, corporate governance, and the potential for a long-term partnership. “Jensen, if we were to work together, I promise you we would jump through hoops for you,” Chang told him. Reflecting on the partnership, Huang noted that TSMC “for the whole time, 30 years, they’ve been jumping through hoops for us.”This longstanding partnership has become central to Nvidia’s meteoric rise, particularly as demand for high-end AI chips has surged. TSMC, which now manufactures Nvidia’s advanced chips, reported on Thursday a 69% year-on-year rise in third-quarter net profit to a record 763.1 billion Taiwan dollars (about $23.5 billion), attributing the jump to strong AI chip demand. The company noted that demand has continued to outpace its production capacity, though it is planning cautiously for 2027 due to broader economic uncertainties.TSMC’s trajectory, along with Nvidia’s, highlights how once-nascent relationships and simple acts of perseverance can define the global technology landscape decades later, as both companies now sit at the heart of the world’s AI hardware boom.
