Hāʻena State Park on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi reopened to visitors on October 15, 39 days after it was closed ahead of Hurricane Lowell, according to an announcement from the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). The closure, initiated on September 6 amid storm safety concerns, was extended to allow staff to assess hazards and conduct necessary repairs. Although the reopening restores access to one of Kauaʻi’s most popular coastal destinations, several restrictions remain in place as recovery efforts continue across the island’s state parks. The park is now open daily between 7 am and 6:45 pm, including holidays, except in case of emergency closures. Visitor shuttle services, halted during the closure, have also resumed. Park officials have emphasized that while day hikes are permitted, two key restrictions remain: overnight camping is not allowed, and hiking beyond the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail is prohibited until further notice. The Kalalau Trail, which runs for 11 miles along the Nāpali Coast, remains partly inaccessible as repairs continue. Day-use hikers will still be able to explore Hanakāpīʻai Beach and Valley, as well as Hanakāpīʻai Falls, but must turn around before the third mile.Entry conditions have also been clarified by DLNR. Hawaii residents can enter the park free of charge with a Hawaii driver’s license or state ID and do not require reservations for day passes, with 30 parking spots reserved exclusively for residents. All vehicle occupants must present Hawaii identification. On the other hand, out-of-state visitors must make advance reservations through the Go Hāʻena website. Out-of-state visitors are charged $5 per person for park entry, while children aged three and under are granted free entry. Parking for out-of-state visitors costs $10 per vehicle, and advance reservations are necessary. The closure and subsequent reopening have had economic implications for the local community. According to DLNR State Parks Administrator Alan Carpenter, Hāʻena State Park supports approximately 50 local jobs. Carpenter noted that the community previously endured a far longer closure following severe flooding in 2018 when Hāʻena State Park and neighboring Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park were shuttered from April 2018 to June 2019, which had a significant impact on employment and local tourism businesses. The setback caused by Hurricane Lowell also affected other Kauaʻi state parks. In its October 13 update, the DLNR stated that Kōkeʻe and Waimea Canyon state parks would remain closed due to extensive storm damage, with other parks on the island also closed or subject to camping restrictions. At Wailua River State Park, access is allowed only to the river, designated landing areas, and trailhead, while Fern Grotto and Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) remain off-limits to individual kayakers and hikers. The department has assured that refunds for park days, camping, or lodging missed due to the closures will be credited, with processing expected to take two to three weeks. While reopening Hāʻena State Park marks an important step in the island’s recovery from the recent hurricane, officials warn that not all trails and campgrounds are ready for full use. Visitors are advised to observe current restrictions and consult the latest official notices before planning their trips.

Hā‘ena State Park in Hawaii reopens 39 days after Hurricane Lowell closure

Tampa Theatre in Florida reopened in October 2026 after a seven-month, $24.5 million restoration ahead of its centennial. The project refreshed the historic auditorium, restored the iconic Ruberg Night Sky ceiling with modern technology, updated infrastructure, uncovered historic objects, and added a new education wing. Community support and major donations helped fund the restoration.

When Tampa Theatre first opened its doors on October 15, 1926, visitors were treated to a movie experience beneath a ceiling that mimicked a night sky filled with twinkling stars and drifting clouds. Nearly 100 years later, the historic Florida “movie palace” has emerged from a $24.5 million, seven-month restoration, blending careful preservation of its unique architectural features with major upgrades designed to secure its future for generations to come. The centerpiece of the restoration, completed ahead of its centennial in October 2026, is the refurbished Duncan Auditorium, crowned by the famed Ruberg Night Sky ceiling. According to American media outlet Tampa Bay 28, one of the most striking enhancements is the new lighting system, which now allows the stars overhead to sparkle with modern LED technology. In addition to recreating the original starlight effect, the theatre can now simulate sunrises and sunsets, while new equipment also recreates the cloud effects that have mesmerized audiences since opening night. As reported by Creative Loafing Tampa, because the original 1926 cloud projector could not be sourced, technicians restored a mid-20th-century machine, believed to date from the 1950s or 1960s, to keep the signature atmospheric touch alive.Restoration efforts extended well beyond the auditorium ceiling. The project was led by EverGreene Architectural Arts, a company known for its work on historic buildings. Specialists conducted forensic paint analysis to identify the original colors hidden beneath later layers, with the goal of returning the space as closely as possible to its 1926 appearance. Tampa Theatre CEO George Leveque noted that the ambition was to recapture the look and feel of the theatre’s earliest days, while also overhauling critical building systems such as plumbing, electrical, and heating infrastructure. The restoration also uncovered long-forgotten relics from the theatre's past, as preparations for a new education wing made it necessary to clear out old storage. Staff discovered furniture, lamps, tables, and paintings that had lain hidden for years, some dating back to the theatre’s early era. Using period photographs, employees were able to determine the original placement of some artworks, with plans to return them to their historic spots. In partnership with the University of South Florida, the theatre digitally scanned historic items that could not be physically restored, creating digital archives to preserve its legacy. Among the restored objects was a burgundy tapestry from the 1926 opening, which has now returned to its original location.A major new development from the $24.5 million investment is a dedicated education center. The theatre has converted more than 3,000 square feet of previously underused space to host film camps, classes, and community programs beyond the main auditorium's schedule. According to Tampa Theatre’s official website, the addition is expected to allow expanded outreach, while accessibility improvements and new technology enhance the venue for future audiences.Tampa Theatre’s Second Century Campaign, supported by both donors and public funding, underwrote the restoration. Tampa Bay 28 reported that the largest single private gift in the theater’s history contributed to the night sky’s revival, shortly followed by another major donation supporting educational facilities. The centennial celebration kicks off on October 15, 2026, marking exactly 100 years since opening night. The program features the silent comedy “Sherlock Jr.” accompanied by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and the theatre's original Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, according to the theatre’s event page. This restoration marks the start of a new chapter for Tampa Theatre, as it steps into its second century with renewed splendor and an expanded mission as a cultural and educational landmark for the region.

Elon Musk stated that SpaceX will reimburse users if Grok’s AI agent makes a financial mistake or leaks card information during purchases. This explicit guarantee differs from Meta and OpenAI, whose terms place responsibility on users. Musk did not specify the policy’s coverage or limits. Elon Musk has pledged that SpaceX will reimburse users if Grok, the company's generative AI agent, makes a mistake during a financial transaction or leaks a user's card information. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Musk responded to a user who praised Grok for booking a flight after being sent a photograph of their credit card. The user highlighted that the airline website was confusing and said Grok completed the purchase and provided confirmation details. Musk replied to the post, stating, "If Grok Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole."While major AI companies like Meta, OpenAI, and SpaceX have developed agents that can interact with financial institutions and make purchases on users' behalf, Musk's explicit commitment to reimburse users is a departure from current industry norms. Typically, user agreements for these AI agents place the responsibility for transactional outcomes squarely on the user. Meta’s terms for its Muse agent, for example, require user approval before any purchase is completed, while Grok's terms acknowledge interactions with financial institutions but stop short of any explicit compensation promise in the event of errors or data breaches.Musk did not clarify the breadth of the guarantee, omitting details such as whether the policy would apply to unauthorized purchases, incorrect bookings, fraud committed by third-party merchants, or knock-on losses like missed flights. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for further information on Musk's statement. The risks associated with AI-powered agents accessing sensitive financial data and making transactions on behalf of users have already begun to surface. In one notable incident, Shane Mac, CEO of software company XMTP Labs, told Business Insider that an AI personal-finance agent he had created using Grok inadvertently posted his bank balances and spending details to his company's executive Slack channel after confusing two similarly named chat rooms. Grok's team subsequently updated its permission controls in response.Other AI agents have triggered similarly unintended consequences. An Instinct agent reportedly ordered 20 pounds of chicken wings during a grocery shopping session, while another user recounted how Muse accepted a lowball offer for a keyboard on Facebook Marketplace and shared his home address with the buyer. In the latter case, the user later realized he had granted the agent permanent purchasing permission, expecting it would nonetheless seek individual approval.Musk’s public pledge to make users whole remains short on specifics, but the statement underscores a wider issue confronting AI companies: as agents gain increasing ability to spend money and access sensitive user data, questions loom over how much financial risk should remain with users and how much responsibility companies should assume. As AI-powered agents become more integrated into online transactions, industry practices and user expectations around liability and protection could face significant change.

JCB India Inaugurates New 3S Dealership in Ranchi, Jharkhand

Archaeologists in Glasgow uncovered remains linked to the 1823 Harvie’s Dyke dispute, where locals destroyed walls built by distiller Thomas Harvie that blocked public access to the River Clyde. Discoveries include a 1791 trade token and building materials. The dispute led to a legal battle, ending with the House of Lords upholding public riverbank rights.

More than two centuries after an act of mass protest saw a crowd of Glasgow residents demolish a wall that restricted public access to the River Clyde, archaeologists have uncovered physical remains directly connected to the historic confrontation. The findings, made in Glasgow’s East End at the site of Harvie’s Dyke in Dalmarnock, provide new insight into a dispute that ultimately helped shape public rights to Scotland’s riversides. The origins of the conflict date back to the early 1820s, when wealthy whisky distiller Thomas "Lang Tam" Harvie purchased the Westthorn estate, bordering the River Clyde. Harvie erected two large walls around his property, one of which extended toward the river and blocked a riverside path long used by local workers and residents. According to historical records, the taller wall reached nearly 12 feet and was reinforced with iron spikes and broken glass, along with a watchtower equipped with small cannons. The barriers quickly became a point of tension for surrounding communities, especially local colliers and labourers who depended on the traditional riverside route.Tensions came to a head on Midsummer's Eve in 1823, when a large demonstration assembled and tore down a section of the wall. The authorities quickly intervened, dispatching cavalry to quell the disturbance and arresting dozens of protesters. Several individuals were later imprisoned in connection with the incident. Although Harvie reconstructed the walls, the episode began a protracted legal dispute over whether the community held the right to pass along the riverbank.Archaeologists working on the Digging the Dyke project, a partnership among the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, Archaeology Scotland, and historian Professor Chris Whatley of the University of Dundee, recently discovered evidence tied to these events. Among the finds are building materials believed to originate from a fortified summerhouse that overlooked the Clyde pathway. The team also recovered a rare Glasgow trade token from 1791, bearing the city’s motto “Let Glasgow Flourish.” Archaeologists have speculated that protesters may have deliberately buried the token at the site, though this remains unconfirmed. The legal wrangling that followed the 1823 protest escalated over several years and culminated with a ruling in the House of Lords in 1828. The court ultimately sided with those defending access to the river, establishing the precedent referred to as the "liberties of the banks of the Clyde." The judgment was widely celebrated in Glasgow through songs, poems, and commemorative medals. Boycotts of Harvie’s whisky followed, and the extended court case reportedly exhausted much of Harvie’s wealth, leading to his bankruptcy and death in poverty about a decade later.Though much of Harvie’s Dyke has been lost to time, a section of the original wall still stands at Thorndyke Lane, offering a tangible reminder of the events that played a significant role in advancing public rights of way. The recent excavation brought together over 400 visitors and participants through public tours, walks, and performances aligned with the 2026 Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival, highlighting both the historical and contemporary resonance of the dispute.Professor Chris Whatley, whose 2025 book "Harvie’s Dyke: The People, their Liberty and the Clyde" examines the episode, described it as a noteworthy victory for ordinary Glaswegians over a landowner unwilling to negotiate. While the confrontation has faded from popular remembrance, the new discoveries are rekindling interest in a pivotal campaign for communal access and civic rights in Glasgow’s history.

Building one of India’s leading technology platforms does not always require a conventional background in business or years in the targeted industry. Sriharsha Majety’s journey to co-founding and leading Swiggy, now a multi-service app known primarily for food delivery, has been marked by exploration across sectors and a readiness to pivot when the opportunity called for it.Majety began his academic path at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, in 2003, graduating in 2008 with a dual degree: Bachelor of Engineering in electrical and electronics, and a Master of Science in physics. During his time at BITS, he took on the role of coordinator for the Department of Photography, an early indication of his interest in diverse pursuits. After completing his studies, Majety began preparing for a career in finance, clearing Level II of the rigorous Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) programme offered by the CFA Institute. While he later wrote on LinkedIn that he no longer aspired to be a finance professional, he cited his enjoyment of the subject and left open the possibility of completing the course in the future. From 2009 to 2011, Majety earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Management with a focus on finance from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta, frequently described as an MBA qualification. He also coordinated placements and internships for large student cohorts, a responsibility he described as the greatest experience of his life, crediting the institute for its steep learning curve.Majety’s first formal steps in the professional world came at Nomura International in London. In 2010, he interned as a summer analyst with the Fixed Income Quantitative Trading Strategies and Structured Credit Trading Desks, leading to a full-time role in 2011 as an associate on the rates trading desk. The Google Pixel 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL feature excellent build quality, strong cameras, clean Android, and long battery life, but are more expensive due to the dropped 128GB model and reduced RAM. Starting at $1,099, they compete with top rivals but offer minimal improvements, making previous Pixel models a better value.

As Google unveils its Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL smartphones, the tech giant confronts a shifting landscape in the flagship mobile market. Traditionally praised for their clean Android experiences, powerful camera systems, and integration with the larger Google ecosystem, Pixel smartphones have carved out a niche among Android aficionados. However, this year’s release sees Google making several notable changes that may test the loyalty of its customer base and challenge its competitive position. The Pixel 11 Pro models come at significantly higher entry prices compared to their predecessors. The company has eliminated the 128GB storage option entirely, meaning customers will now pay at least $1,099 in the US (£1,079 in the UK or €1,199 in Europe) for the 256GB Pro, and $1,299 (£1,279/€1,399) for the larger Pro XL variant. At the same time, the devices deliver 4GB less RAM than prior generations, a concession Google attributes to an ongoing global memory shortage. As a result, consumers find themselves paying more for less in raw specifications, even as the Pixel 11 Pro delivers across other areas. The hardware improvements are incremental compared to last year’s Pixel 10 Pro series. The Pro XL differentiates itself mostly with a larger 6.8-inch OLED display, a higher capacity 5,115mAh battery, and faster 45W wired charging. Both models sport the same triple-lens camera setup (50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP telephoto) as before, and the overall industrial design remains familiar, though a new salmon-pink color option dubbed Canyon offers a fresh look. A minor new feature, dubbed HiLight, introduces a colored notification LED on the rear, but with limited customization at launch.Google has removed the physical SIM card slot in US handsets for a second consecutive year, following Apple’s lead to make space for a larger battery and improved 5G hardware. This could present an inconvenience for users who frequently switch carriers or travel internationally with physical SIM cards. In terms of ergonomics, however, the Pixel 11 Pro receives high marks for its comfortable form factor and lightweight build, measuring 6.3 inches diagonally and weighing 7.2 ounces.Battery life is a standout strength, as the device reliably lasts beyond 30 hours on a single charge in moderate use scenarios. Onboard software offers comprehensive controls and diagnostics for power management and battery health, supported by intelligent optimizations made possible by Google’s latest Tensor G6 processor. While the charging speeds are not record-breaking, they are in line with industry norms, offering up to 45W on the Pro XL model. On the software side, the Pixel 11 Pro continues to deliver an uncluttered Android experience with no additional bloatware. Integration with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini Nano, is a highlight, although the new Tensor G6 chipset prioritizes on-device AI processing at the expense of raw performance metrics compared to rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro.Despite seven years of promised security updates, the Pixel 11 Pro’s increased price and reduced RAM complicate its value proposition against last year’s Pixel 10 Pro models and other high-end competitors. The device remains compelling for its design, camera quality, and battery life, but the lack of substantial upgrades and the higher cost may make it a harder sell for buyers seeking the best value in the current premium smartphone market.

A Florida woman reported her car stolen on October 12 after she agreed to help two strangers charge their phone, only to have them drive off with her vehicle while she briefly stepped away. According to Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons, the incident unfolded in Cantonment, a community in Florida’s Panhandle, following a request for assistance from a man and a woman who claimed they had traveled from Lake County for hurricane recovery work.Authorities say the pair approached the woman in the neighborhood of Welcome Circle and explained that their phones had run out of power. In an apparent act of kindness, she allowed one of them to charge a phone inside her vehicle. However, as soon as she stepped away from the car, the two allegedly seized the opportunity to steal the vehicle. Sheriff Simmons relayed the details of the theft as reported by NorthEscambia.com.Later that morning, at approximately 9:57 am, an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy identified the stolen vehicle traveling south on Highway 29, just past West Roberts Road. When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the suspects failed to comply, prompting a pursuit through local roadways. The chase culminated at the intersection of Highway 29 and Ten Mile Road, where the stolen car collided with several other vehicles before coming to a halt. Both suspects, identified by sheriff’s officials as 30-year-old Dustin Lee Kelley and 29-year-old Amanda Carr, were arrested at the scene without further incident. Emergency Medical Services responded to assess individuals involved in the collision, but Sheriff Simmons confirmed that there were no serious injuries and no one required hospitalization.Booking information provided by Yahoo and local jail records indicate that Kelley was charged with grand theft, fleeing and eluding police with disregard for safety, and possession of no more than 20 grams of marijuana. Carr was charged with grand theft in connection with the alleged vehicle theft. Both Kelley and Carr were booked into the Escambia County Jail on October 12 and, as of the latest reports, were being held without bond. The Florida Highway Patrol has launched an investigation into the multi-car crash that concluded the police pursuit. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the extent of damage to the vehicles involved or any additional charges that may be pending. The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of providing help to strangers, even when the request appears reasonable. Local law enforcement continues to remind residents to remain vigilant when interacting with unknown individuals to prevent similar incidents in the future.

A self-proclaimed vigilante group in the West Midlands, UK, has drawn widespread criticism after its members filmed themselves confronting Indian students in a public park, questioning their presence in the area, and ordering them to leave. The incident, which took place during a late-night patrol at Meriden Park in Chelmsley Wood, was documented in a video that circulated online after being deleted from the group’s social media account. The group, identifying itself as the Chelmsley Wood Patriots, claimed it was acting to protect women and children, saying parks should be reserved for local families. In the footage, group members can be seen questioning the students about why they were in England. When one student replied that he usually lived in Birmingham and had just come to the area that day, and another explained he had been pursuing a master's degree in England for two years, members of the group proceeded to warn them not to return to the park. One man told them, “What you need to do is stay away from a children’s park. Do not come round here again. Do not be seen here again. This is your final warning,” before instructing the students to go home.Following the incident, local activists and political representatives condemned the group’s actions, arguing that the confrontation appeared to be racially motivated. Former councillor and community activist Shesh Sheshabhatter told BirminghamLive the students “had done nothing wrong and had every right to meet and walk outdoors,” emphasizing that “we can see no reason they were targeted other than the colour of their skin.” Sheshabhatter further criticized the group for harming the reputation of Chelmsley Wood, saying true patriotism means standing up for neighbors, not intimidating them. The episode also prompted a response from local law enforcement. West Midlands Police acknowledged receiving reports about the vigilante activity and said that an appropriate policing response was underway. Solihull Police separately noted their awareness of the video circulating online, and Police Inspector Jenny Willetts made it clear that stop-and-search powers are reserved exclusively for police officers under specific legal provisions, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. Willetts added, “We do not endorse, condone or encourage its activities and do not work with its members,” promising appropriate action if any crime was reported.Police advised anyone with concerns to contact them via their website or the 101 non-emergency number, and encouraged the public to call 999 in emergencies. The incident has raised concerns among local communities about vigilantism and ethnic profiling, prompting calls for reassurance and further action from authorities.

UK vigilante group tells Indian students in park to 'go home,' sparking outrage

India may begin implementing Bharat Stage 7 (BS7) emission norms from April 2029, starting with passenger vehicles, followed by light commercial vehicles in 2030 and heavy-duty trucks in 2031, with a phased rollout until 2035. BS7 will tighten particulate emissions standards, include non-exhaust sources, and require real-world testing. Final rules await confirmation.

India is preparing to introduce its next generation of vehicle emission standards, Bharat Stage 7 (BS7), beginning April 2029, according to a recent report by The Economic Times. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has signed off on a draft timeline that could see these stringent norms phased in over a six-year period, bringing the country's regulatory framework closer in line with Europe’s upcoming Euro 7 standards. The initial phase of the proposed BS7 rollout would target passenger vehicles manufactured from April 2029. Light commercial vehicles and pick-up vans are expected to fall under the new norms from 2030, with heavy-duty trucks and buses following suit in April 2031. The phased implementation is proposed to continue until April 2035. As of now, authorities have not announced a separate schedule for two-wheelers, leaving their timeline uncertain. The new requirements would be enforced only on vehicles manufactured after the respective deadlines, meaning the current on-road fleet, including those compliant with BS6 standards, would not be retroactively affected by the transition. One of the most significant changes under BS7 will be the tightening of particulate-number measurement. While existing BS6 limits for most gaseous pollutants in passenger vehicles would remain unchanged, the new standards propose lowering the minimum particle size threshold counted during emissions testing from 23 nanometres to 10 nanometres. This move will expand the scope of particulate pollution measurement to include smaller particles previously unaccounted for, addressing concerns around ultrafine particulate matter that can have adverse health effects.Additionally, BS7 intends to address non-exhaust emissions for the first time by bringing brake wear and tyre abrasion under the regulatory framework. By accounting for these sources, the standards aim to offer a more holistic approach to vehicular pollution, which is growing in importance as overall exhaust emissions decline.A key feature of the draft proposal is a shift from laboratory-based approvals to real-world testing conditions. Vehicles would be assessed not just in controlled environments but also under actual operating conditions, and independent testing agencies would be authorized to check ongoing compliance post-sale. For heavy-duty vehicles, the proposed BS7 standards target reductions in major pollutants by between 20 percent and 50 percent, according to the Economic Times report. The current framework and timeline remain in the draft stage, so final requirements and rollout dates could be adjusted before official adoption. The government’s move signals a continued push toward cleaner mobility, but the auto industry and regulators will be watching closely for further clarity on final standards and compliance timelines.
