Despite mixed to negative word of mouth, Nani-starrer The Paradise is outperforming October 2 releases in ticket sales, recording 27,000 BookMyShow bookings on its second Saturday. It has reached breakeven in the Nizam region, while Don’t Trouble The Trouble, Dorothy, Sigma, and Thella Kaagitham are seeing lower or declining ticket sales.

Despite facing mixed to negative word of mouth, “The Paradise,” headlined by Nani, is achieving an unexpected level of box-office momentum in the Telugu film market, outpacing a wave of high-profile releases from October 2. According to data from ticketing platform BookMyShow, the film has outperformed newly released competitors starring established names such as Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh, and Sundeep Kishan. As of its second Saturday (Day 10 since release), “The Paradise” recorded about 27,000 ticket sales on BookMyShow. This figure is notably higher than the second-day sales of its rivals, including Fahadh Faasil’s “Don’t Trouble The Trouble,” which managed 14,520 tickets, and Keerthy Suresh’s “Dorothy,” which has yet to demonstrate a significant sales trend. In addition, Sundeep Kishan’s “Sigma” - while opening strong with around 54,000 tickets sold on release day - saw a steep decline to 25,190 on its second day. Another October 2 release, “Thella Kaagitham,” which was projected to be popular with youth audiences, ended its Day 2 at 22,620 tickets sold.In a key regional milestone, “The Paradise” has also reportedly reached its breakeven point in the Nizam area, inclusive of GST, according to 123telugu Movie News. This early financial success has kept the film relevant in box-office conversations even as audience responses remain uneven. The ability of “The Paradise” to sustain and even build on its audience numbers nearly two weeks into its run contrasts sharply with the trend seen in its newer competitors. Typically, newly released films featuring major stars enjoy a robust opening backed by anticipation, with momentum driven by favorable reviews and word of mouth. However, in this instance, it is the older film with only lukewarm critical reception that currently leads in ongoing ticket sales. The trajectory of ticket bookings for the October 2 releases shows the challenges these films face. While some, like “Sigma,” started strong, their early momentum waned rapidly. In contrast, “The Paradise” continues to attract audiences despite its initial mixed reception and competition from fresher titles with arguably bigger star power. The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether “The Paradise” can sustain its upward box-office trajectory and cement its status as one of the season’s unexpected hits. Meanwhile, the newer releases will need to rely on improved audience feedback and word of mouth to reverse their declining booking trends and pose a serious challenge at the box office in the weeks ahead.

In the Rejinagar bypoll, where nearly 70% of voters are Muslim, the BJP shifts its narrative to development, directly courting minority voters. With AJUP’s Gulam Nabi Azad and multiple Muslim candidates from TMC, Congress, and CPI(M), the contest is fragmented. Accusations of intimidation and communal polarization shape the high-stakes electoral battle.

As the sun sets over Begunbari in the Rejinagar region of West Bengal, an unusual political scene unfolds. The local BJP leadership, led by Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya and party candidate Shankharavh Sarkar, stands before a crowd that is predominantly Muslim - a significant shift from previous election cycles where minority support for the BJP was notably absent. The event follows a sizable roadshow involving more than a hundred motorcycles, signaling the BJP's intensified efforts to make inroads in a constituency where nearly 70 percent of the population is Muslim. This change in voter outreach comes just days after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared the October 6 bypoll a crucial "test" for the minority community, inviting them to align with the BJP. Bhattacharya emphasized the party’s development-oriented pitch to Muslims, stating that most Muslims in rural areas live on monthly incomes of Rs 5,000 or less and have limited access to government jobs, adding, "The situation needs to change."Traditionally accused by opposition parties of stoking communal tensions, the BJP’s campaign in Rejinagar has shifted its narrative, highlighting promises of economic advancement and inclusion rather than religious divisions. Bhattacharya, widely seen as the party's moderate face in Bengal, insisted, “In these last six months under our government, has there been a single riot?... This is not the time to do Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir. For the next 20 years, it will be our government both at the Centre and in the state. You will have to stay with us. You will have to choose.”The mention of Babri Masjid is particularly resonant in Rejinagar, where AJUP leader Humayun Kabir won the seat in the April 2026 Assembly elections by more than 24 percentage points over the BJP and set about constructing a replica of the Babri Masjid. This bypoll was triggered after Kabir vacated Rejinagar for Nouda, with his son Gulam Nabi Azad now contesting as the AJUP candidate. Kabir claims the BJP administration is intimidating his party, with several leaders arrested and ongoing police scrutiny, leaving the AJUP to campaign only through online channels. The contest is further complicated by a fragmented opposition. Alongside the AJUP, the Congress, CPI(M), and two rival TMC factions are fielding Muslim candidates, potentially splitting the minority vote. At the Babri Masjid replica site, Kabir disclosed that Rs 10 crore had been raised in donations, yet expressed reluctance to campaign openly citing harassment and official pressure to abandon the mosque’s name.Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, the Mamata TMC candidate and a three-time winner from Rejinagar, is also warning of police intimidation, echoing concerns raised by Kabir. Chowdhury argues the bypoll offers an opportunity for minority voters to assert their issues amid claims that only Mamata Banerjee represents an alternative to the BJP's Hindu-centric administration. Meanwhile, divisions within the TMC - symbolized by denied access to the party’s traditional symbol - have added another layer of uncertainty.Despite these challenges, BJP’s local candidate Sarkar remains optimistic, stating, “There is no Hindu-Muslim, no minority-majority. The people of Rejinagar want colleges, factories, a bridge, and the only person who can give them is Suvendu Adhikari and the BJP government.” A local BJP leader acknowledged that a split in the Muslim vote could favor the party, traditionally reliant on a consolidated Hindu vote. With voters like farmer Abdul Sheikh closely observing the latest political moves, the results of the October 6 bypoll remain highly unpredictable. For the BJP, a win would mark a historic breakthrough in Muslim-majority Rejinagar, while the crowded anti-BJP field raises the stakes for all parties involved.

The Congress’s appointment of Saharanpur MP Imran Masood as working president of its Uttar Pradesh unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls has caused unease in ally Samajwadi Party, which sees it as a pressure tactic in seat-sharing talks. Masood’s influence and remarks may intensify competition for Muslim votes and complicate alliance negotiations.

The Congress party’s recent decision to appoint Imran Masood, the Saharanpur Member of Parliament, as working president of its Uttar Pradesh unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections has sparked concern within the party’s ally, the Samajwadi Party (SP). The SP, which regards the move as a strategic attempt by Congress to apply pressure on seat-sharing negotiations and strengthen its claim to Muslim-dominated constituencies, is weighing the potential impact on its alliance with Congress.Congress’s choice comes as both parties begin early talks for the 2027 elections, with Congress pressing for a swift finalization of seat-sharing arrangements. While SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary publicly maintained that Masood’s appointment would not affect the alliance discussions, senior SP figures expressed unease over Masood’s recent remarks related to the alliance and the Muslim vote. According to one SP insider, although UP Congress president Aradhana Misra Mona has positive working relations with the SP, making alliance talks smoother, Masood’s outspokenness on alliance matters has complicated negotiations.SP leaders believe Congress’s strategy serves a dual purpose, both vying for a larger number of seats and positioning itself as a competitive alternative for Muslim voters, traditionally seen as SP supporters. One senior SP leader noted that while Masood wields substantial influence in Saharanpur, his sway does not extend uniformly across western UP. SP leaders also argue that Masood’s attempts to expedite negotiations and increase Congress’s seat tally in Muslim-dominated areas are a calculated move to secure anti-BJP votes.Masood’s personal history with the SP and other political parties adds a layer of complexity. Since entering politics as an Independent MLA in 2007, Masood has shifted allegiances multiple times, serving as a Congress youth leader, joining SP ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls, moving to the Bahujan Samaj Party briefly, and returning to Congress in late 2023. After being elected as Saharanpur MP with SP support in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, his new appointment has stoked suspicions among some in the SP, who remember his defection after not receiving Assembly tickets for himself or his associates. As for seat-sharing, the Saharanpur region is emerging as a likely flashpoint. Last month, Masood asserted that Congress would contest the five Assembly seats in Saharanpur it had fought in 2017, declaring the district a party stronghold. In response, SP leaders from western UP indicated that the party intends to claim all Assembly seats within the Saharanpur Lok Sabha constituency.Concerns also stem from Masood’s public remarks urging SP leader Akhilesh Yadav to finalize an alliance or risk Congress going solo in the polls. In September 2024, Masood emphasized that defeating the BJP without cooperation from Congress would be unfeasible, a statement that some in the SP interpret as exerting additional pressure. While official Congress leaders did not comment on internal alliance dynamics, a party senior acknowledged that tension stems partly from Masood’s previous party switches but said instructions have been given to Masood to refrain from criticizing the SP in public. With the UP Assembly elections set for February 2027, the evolving situation between Congress and SP over seat-sharing and alliance terms is likely to remain a central element in the build-up to the polls. Both parties appear determined to maximize their electoral prospects, but the management of personalities and party strategies could prove decisive in shaping the opposition’s challenge to the BJP in the state.

Imran Masood's role causes strain in Congress-SP alliance before UP polls

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the private sector to lead investments, especially in R&D, noting India's R&D spending is only 0.83% of GDP, with the private sector contributing one-third. With economic resilience built since 2014, recent data shows private investments rising, as seen in GDP growth of 7.8% and GFCF growth of 11.9%.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged India’s private sector to take a leading role in driving investment, especially in Research and Development (R&D), as the country prepares to navigate an era marked by persistent global uncertainty. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, organised by the Institute of Economic Growth and the Ministry of Finance, Sitharaman highlighted the importance of bolstering innovation capacity through stepped-up investment and greater private sector participation.India’s expenditure on R&D currently stands at 0.83 percent of GDP, less than a third of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of 2.7 percent, according to the finance minister. Notably, only about one-third of India’s R&D spending comes from the private sector, underscoring the need for increased industry engagement. “Raising both the scale of investment and private sector participation is essential to strengthening our innovation capacity,” Sitharaman said.Recent economic data suggests private investment is beginning to pick up momentum. India’s GDP expanded at a faster-than-expected 7.8 percent in the April-June quarter, buoyed by a sharp 11.9 percent rise in Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), which serves as a key indicator of investments. This compares with a 5.8 percent GFCF growth rate in the first quarter of 2025-26. In nominal terms, GFCF growth for April-June reached a notable 20.4 percent, lifting its share of GDP to 34.3 percent, up from 31.4 percent a year earlier.Sitharaman attributed part of this resilience to the government’s consistent application of fiscal prudence and a step-by-step approach to reforms since 2014. She cited ongoing efforts in taxation, finance, insolvency, business regulation, infrastructure planning, and public administration, describing them as “gradual but transformational,” with each reform reinforcing the others. The finance minister referenced Kautilya’s Arthashastra to illustrate the importance of safeguarding the treasury during stable periods to ensure agility in times of crisis. “A state that guards its finances in calm years retains the freedom to act when conditions turn,” she said, stressing that resilience must be built consistently over time and not treated as a one-off exercise.Besides urging greater private sector investment, Sitharaman outlined additional priorities for the coming years. She emphasized the need for structural autonomy in sourcing strategic inputs, pointing to the centrality of resource security in macroeconomic policy. Global economic integration remains crucial, according to Sitharaman, who called for the diversification of partnerships, open markets, and the fulfillment of international commitments to help ensure stable trade. In a final note, the finance minister called for reforms to the global financial architecture to reflect emerging growth centers, advocating for progress in reforming multilateral development banks so as to provide larger, faster, and more predictable long-term financing options for developing countries. As India looks ahead to 2047, Sitharaman underscored the ambition to convert new capacities into higher productivity, better employment, and expanded opportunities so that more citizens, businesses, and regions can actively contribute to, and benefit from, the country’s development journey.

Russia announced continued targeted strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in response to alleged Ukrainian attacks, warning foreign nationals to leave Ukraine. Ukraine vowed to increase strikes on Russian oil refineries without targeting civilians. Russia has announced it will continue retaliatory airstrikes targeting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, following what it described as “terrorist acts” by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Russian civilians and infrastructure. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Russian foreign ministry emphasized that its military would systematically strike military sites in Ukraine’s capital and across the country. The ministry also called on foreign nationals and diplomats still present in Kyiv to leave immediately, warning that responsibility for any harm would fall on those who disregard the alert.Tensions have deepened as the war approaches winter, with Russia ramping up attacks on key infrastructure in Kyiv. On Saturday, the capital’s vital bridge spanning the Dnipro River was struck during a wave of air raids. The latest attacks have disrupted daily life for Kyiv’s population of approximately 3 million, with concerns rising over the security and basic functioning of the city as colder months loom. Russian President Vladimir Putin, referencing the increase in strikes, stated this week that Ukraine was bearing the consequences of its own actions targeting Russia. In response, Ukraine has vowed to escalate its counteroffensive against Russia’s energy sector, notably its oil refineries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that while Kyiv would intensify strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, it would refrain from targeting civilians. Zelensky disclosed that Ukrainian intelligence had secured documents indicating that Russian authorities, under President Putin, had formed a new military strategy authorizing attacks on a broader array of civilian targets ahead of the expected harsh winter.Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict appear to be underway, with Ukraine evaluating four separate ceasefire proposals. According to Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, India’s suggestion constitutes the “broadest” among the offers currently on the table. Speaking to reporters in Kyiv on Friday, Sybiha stated that Ukraine is open to a ceasefire that would include safeguards for energy infrastructure and the Black Sea, but only if both components are included. The proposals under consideration have come from India, Turkiye, Egypt, and the United States.Russian President Vladimir Putin previously acknowledged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposals, describing them as “very good ideas” for reaching a mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict. For now, both military activity and diplomatic discussions continue, with little indication of an imminent end to the hostilities. As airstrikes and counterstrikes intensify, the humanitarian and economic toll on civilians in both Russia and Ukraine continues to grow, and strategic international mediation remains more urgent than ever.

India's high commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, clarified that former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on a Bangladeshi military aircraft after her government's fall in August 2024, not with Indian military assistance. India’s high commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, clarified on Saturday that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on a Bangladeshi military aircraft following the fall of her government in August 2024, not through the involvement of the Indian air force or army. Trivedi addressed these details in response to persistent questions about Hasina's entry into India after political upheaval in Bangladesh led to her sudden displacement.Speaking at a session during the Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka, Trivedi noted, “At that point in time, Hasina was still Prime Minister. We hardly had any choice other than accepting her as she was still Bangladesh's PM.” He elaborated that Indian authorities faced an unexpected situation, stressing that the decision to grant her entry was based on diplomatic responsibility and the circumstances at hand. “It was our duty as a neighbour to accept the reality of life. Situations are such where at times you are not prepared for it,” Trivedi said, emphasizing that denying landing permission to Hasina’s aircraft would have created uncertainties and potentially escalated matters further.Trivedi reiterated that the incident occurred during what he described as “tragic circumstances” in Bangladesh, but underscored that there was no intervention or initiative from the Indian military in Hasina’s arrival. He pointed out the need to acknowledge the difference between facilitating an entry and orchestrating an extraction, countering any speculation that India had actively brought the former Bangladeshi leader into the country. On the matter of Bangladesh’s ongoing request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, Trivedi stated that the issue is currently subject to legal proceedings within India. He explained that “the process is legal and well structured,” but cautioned against expectations for a swift resolution. “The courts are involved in the matter and nobody can give a timeframe,” he said, maintaining the stance that no further comment could be made regarding possible outcomes or the duration of the legal process.During his remarks, Trivedi also touched upon the broader dynamics of the bilateral relationship, emphasizing that India’s ties with Bangladesh are pursued independently of Bangladesh’s relations with other countries. He highlighted the importance of “continuous dialogue, mutual respect and trust” between the two neighbors, stating that all issues between New Delhi and Dhaka are ultimately resolvable through ongoing engagement. “I can guarantee you, there is no stoppage of the process. The process is ongoing,” the high commissioner assured, suggesting that while progress may sometimes be gradual, diplomatic channels remain open and active. The developments come at a sensitive juncture for Bangladesh-India relations, with both nations charting their course through diplomatic and legal challenges amid changing political realities in Dhaka.

Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada will resign after the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike, who remains unconscious in hospital. Governor Bill Lee has halted further executions and appointed Ed Stanton to review the incident. This was the second botched execution in five months, raising concerns about the state’s death penalty process.

Tennessee’s Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has announced his resignation following the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee confirmed on Saturday. This development comes as the state faces mounting scrutiny over its execution protocols, after encountering its second botched execution attempt in just five months. The resignation of Strada, effective this month, arrives amid intensifying calls for answers after members of an execution team were unable to complete Pike’s execution on Wednesday. Governor Lee responded to the situation by appointing former US Attorney Ed Stanton to lead an independent review into the failed attempt and has temporarily halted all further executions until the review's findings are complete. In a statement, Strada asserted that his resignation was “in the best interest of Tennesseans” while noting that he believed the state had “carried out its responsibilities in accordance with the established protocol.” Despite this, Pike, 50, remained unconscious and on a ventilator in hospital as of Saturday, after state officials administered two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital that failed to complete her execution. Pike’s legal team reported hospital staff were attempting to clear the lethal drug from her system, though no immediate update on her condition was available at the time of the governor’s announcement. The legal representatives for Pike welcomed Strada’s resignation yet argued it “does nothing to help Christa now.” The four-lawyer team stressed that what happened during Pike’s failed execution attempts reflected “a systemic failure that goes far beyond any one person,” and expressed hope that the independent review would reveal deeper problems within Tennessee’s death penalty system.According to Pike’s lawyers, the failure to execute was caused by issues with inserting intravenous lines, which resulted in pentobarbital being delivered into Pike’s body rather than her bloodstream. Witnesses reported that Pike cooperated as the team struggled with the procedure, even directing staff to potential IV sites by saying, “please try here, please try here.”This marks the second halted execution since May in Tennessee. Previously, the state had called off the execution of Tony Carruthers after being unable to successfully establish required IV lines. Following this, Governor Lee ordered that Carruthers should not face execution again for at least a year. In 2022, Lee also turned to Ed Stanton to oversee a review after another execution was called off for procedural errors; Stanton later found that Tennessee had failed to adhere to its own lethal injection protocols.Frank Strada, who assumed the commissioner role in Tennessee in January 2023 after serving as deputy director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, faced scrutiny over his prior record as well. In Arizona, executions resumed in 2022 after an eight-year pause, and records show repeated issues with IV placements, including a high-profile 25-minute ordeal to locate a vein in the case of Clarence Dixon.Critics such as attorney Kit Thomas highlighted that Strada’s track record with problematic executions in Arizona was already “well known” when he was hired to address Tennessee’s execution procedures. In late 2024, Strada had announced a change to Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol by mandating use of pentobarbital as the sole drug.As Tennessee’s leadership searches for solutions to its troubled lethal injection process, the latest incident has drawn condemnation from both death penalty supporters and opponents, amplifying calls for overhaul and accountability within the state’s capital punishment system.

Maya Angelou’s quote, “Love recognizes no barriers,” emphasizes that genuine love overcomes obstacles such as distance, fear, or misunderstandings to reach its destination with hope. Walls can keep people apart, but as Maya Angelou once expressed, real love is marked by its ability to surmount seemingly insurmountable hurdles. Angelou’s renowned quote, “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope,” stands as a testament to the power of connection in overcoming the divisions set by circumstance, emotion, or history. Decades after she wrote these words, they continue to resonate deeply, reflecting not just romance but a much broader human yearning to connect and heal divisions.Angelou, born Marguerite Annie Johnson in 1928, experienced significant difficulty in her early years, including trauma, racism, and long periods of selective mutism in childhood. Yet she emerged as a celebrated poet, author, activist, and one of America’s most influential literary voices. Her writing consistently returned to themes of identity, dignity, and resilience, informed by her personal journey of surmounting barriers. The image of love climbing over fences or breaking through walls is given further weight by Angelou’s own experiences, suggesting that people need not be defined by the obstacles they have faced. The barriers Angelou mentions are not always physical; they can be misunderstandings, pride, fear, or the emotional distance that lingers after years of pain. The striking aspect of her quote is the emphasis on hope. Instead of depicting love as passively waiting for obstacles to disappear, Angelou describes it as forceful and persistent, continually moving forward in the hope of connection even when certainty is absent. This resonates with what psychologists observe about human relationships. Social connection is critical to emotional well-being and a sense of belonging, while isolation can negatively impact mental and physical health. The determination to stay connected, to try again after disappointment or separation, reflects a fundamental human instinct. However, Angelou’s words do not suggest that love should overcome all barriers unconditionally. Some obstacles - such as abuse, manipulation, or profound breaches of trust - may necessitate distance for the sake of one’s wellbeing. Setting boundaries and recognizing when to walk away is sometimes the most loving action. Angelou’s message is therefore less about conquering every challenge and more about making a sincere effort to preserve relationships that are healthy and worthwhile.Ultimately, love, as viewed by Angelou, extends beyond romantic entanglements to encompass family, friendship, and community ties. Sometimes the wall is built from a simple misunderstanding or an unspoken apology. In other cases, it might be the daunting expanse of physical separation or deeply rooted emotional wounds. Whatever the shape of the barrier, Angelou’s imagery encourages an active, hopeful striving toward reconnection, underlining why her words endure: the universal reality of relational hurdles and the hope that they can, at least sometimes, be moved beyond.

Maya Angelou’s “Love recognizes no barriers” and its profound meaning

India’s political landscape is witnessing change as established parties fail to inspire voters, with opposition leaders seen as disconnected heirs and the BJP criticized for empty symbolism and lack of real progress. Young activists, dubbed “cockroaches,” are better connecting with people, highlighting growing dissatisfaction among youth and signaling a shift toward more genuine political engagement.

In recent months, India’s political landscape has entered a period of unusual turbulence and transformation, marked by public agitation and a conspicuous disconnect between established parties and the nation's youth. Against a background of enduring political stasis, this moment is considered by some commentators as both fraught with challenge and brimming with potential.Last week, nearly all major political parties chose Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, as an opportunity to launch new campaigns aimed at unseating the Chief Election Commissioner. Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, familiar as the center of public dissent, saw noise and chaos after the government chose to curtail large gatherings at the site. Among the many protestors, members of the newly emergent 'Cockroach Janta Party' were joined by supporters from the Aam Aadmi Party and other left-wing groups, signaling an unusual convergence of interests around current grievances in the electoral process.Observers noted a sharp contrast in the approach taken by opposition parties versus that of the 'Cockroach Janta Party.' India's prominent opposition leaders convened indoors, limiting public access to little more than brief photo opportunities before deliberating in private. In contrast, leaders associated with the cockroach movement took to the streets of Mumbai, engaging with ordinary people and mobilizing support face-to-face - a strategy reminiscent of earlier political traditions but increasingly rare in recent years. This divergence is significant as younger voters, observers argue, seem weary of the rigid 'electoral feudalism' embodied by political dynasties. These so-called ‘potted plants,’ a phrase popularized by political strategist Prashant Kishor, are often perceived as inheritors, rather than originators, of their platforms and political privilege. Their prolonged inability to capture voter enthusiasm, particularly since the rise of Narendra Modi, has not gone unnoticed.Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after years in power, faces criticism for relying heavily on the cultivated image and leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Public events, such as Gandhi Jayanti, have sometimes devolved into staged photo opportunities, with senior ministers cleaning spaces already free of litter rather than addressing genuine issues - fueling perceptions of insincerity. Recent campaigns meant to showcase 'seva' or service, launched around Modi's birthday, have similarly drawn skepticism, with critics pointing to a disconnect between highly publicized initiatives and their on-ground impact.Chief ministers from the BJP, particularly in states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, have made high-profile claims of transformation backed by glossy advertising depicting highways and industrial growth. Yet, commentators lament that funds spent on promotions might be more effectively used to address fundamental needs, such as education, healthcare, and environmental cleanup, which remain pressing concerns for a broad swathe of the population. The government's recent efforts to communicate with India’s youth - attempting Gen-Z-friendly outreach on platforms like Instagram - have yet to yield significant engagement, as many young Indians are seen as both highly informed and critical of traditional political messaging. With vocal campaigns demanding better governance, schools, and election practices, this generation appears poised to reshape expectations of public leadership and accountability. As established parties attempt to adapt, and new political forces emerge with unorthodox tactics, India enters a period of palpable change. While the outcome remains uncertain, the coming months are likely to test how effectively the nation's political institutions can respond to a restless and rapidly evolving electorate.

Tavleen Singh: Immediate political transformation is essential

Crude shipments from the West Asian Gulf, excluding Iran, returned to pre-war levels at 16.5 million barrels per day in September as countries used pipelines and shuttle tankers to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi pipeline loadings rose from 0.8 to 4.3 million barrels per day, and UAE's from 1.1 to 2.7 million.

Crude oil exports from the West Asian Gulf region, excluding Iran, have rebounded to pre-war levels despite ongoing disruptions at the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. According to data provided by maritime intelligence and research firm Kpler, at least 16.5 million barrels per day (mbd) of crude left the region between September 1 and 28, aligning with the average volumes recorded before the conflict intensified. This recovery marks a substantial improvement compared to the average 10.5 mbd shipped during the peak of the West Asia war in March. Before the onset of the conflict, approximately 83 percent of the Gulf’s crude exports were routed through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil chokepoint. However, mounting risks in this vital passage have prompted Gulf exporters to adopt new strategies to ensure supply continuity. In September, only 60 percent of crude shipments physically crossed Hormuz, while 40 percent were exported through pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that avoid the strait altogether.Emmanuel Belostrino, head of global crude and geopolitical market data at Kpler, noted that the crude which did cross the Strait of Hormuz generally relied on a new mode of transportation. Over 70 percent of crude shipments passing through the strait in August transferred from one tanker to another offshore in the Gulf of Oman, avoiding extended exposure to the high-risk area. The remainder of the recovery in export volumes has been achieved through maximized use of pipeline infrastructure and export terminals located outside the strait. Saudi Arabia notably ramped up crude flows through its east-west pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea, with daily loadings rising from 0.8 mbd before the war to 4.3 mbd as of June. Similarly, the UAE expanded shipments via the Abu Dhabi crude oil pipeline to the port of Fujairah, increasing loadings from 1.1 mbd to 2.7 mbd.Even so, Kpler’s analysis shows that confirmed crude crossings through the Strait of Hormuz remain more than a quarter below pre-war volumes. The shortfall, however, has been almost entirely offset by the surge in exports via alternative routes, preserving the region’s overall supply levels to global markets.Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that its member countries released 325 million barrels of oil and oil products from strategic reserves this year. This is out of a total of 400 million barrels pledged in March in response to the geopolitical crisis and ensuing supply disruptions. The combined effect of these developments highlights the West Asian Gulf’s ability to maintain a robust export flow, demonstrating flexibility under pressure by diversifying export channels and leveraging strategic oil reserves.
