According to Vi, free international roaming will be available with postpaid plans starting from Rs 501, annual prepaid unlimited data plans, and corporate plans for enterprise users beginning at Rs 451. The offer includes benefits such as complimentary roaming for up to three trips a year, with each plan providing different international data quotas and outgoing minutes depending on the specific variant. The company claims this could help users save as much as Rs 9,000 per year in roaming fees.
The announcement comes as Vi seeks to simplify the complexities that customers typically encounter while traveling internationally. Traditionally, staying connected meant managing multiple SIM cards, purchasing local or dedicated travel SIMs prior to departure, or relying on public Wi-Fi - all of which could compromise security and convenience. Users also risked losing access to their Indian mobile number, missing important one-time passwords (OTPs), and were frequently concerned about unpredictable roaming bills.
Abhijit Kishore, CEO of Vodafone Idea, acknowledged these long-standing issues in a note to customers, highlighting that many people either switched off mobile data entirely or searched for free Wi-Fi networks simply to send a message. Even basic activities, such as making a phone call or checking a route on Google Maps, could end up costing more than a taxi ride, he noted.
“With this breakthrough offering, customers and their family members can now stay connected while travelling globally, across 170-plus countries, for free,” the company said in a statement. Vi described the move as a step towards democratizing global roaming access, making international connectivity inclusive, straightforward, and worry-free for Indian travelers.
The telecom operator’s latest offering is positioned as a bold measure to remove the hassles associated with international mobility, targeting not only individual consumers but also enterprise clients who require constant connectivity abroad. As Indian outbound travel continues to grow, the company’s decision to integrate international roaming into its core bouquet of services could set a new benchmark for competing providers.
Vi’s free international roaming offer is now available for new and existing customers on eligible plans, as the company seeks to boost customer retention and attract new subscribers with enhanced value. The long-term impact on revenue and usage patterns remains to be seen, but Vodafone Idea is anticipating a positive response to what it calls a "disruptive proposition" in the Indian telecom landscape.
