RailTel wins ₹21.57 crore, 5-year telecom services contract from CMPDI

RailTel Corporation of India Limited has received a significant boost to its order book after securing a fresh five-year contract from the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), a public sector entity operating in India’s mining sector. The company informed stock exchanges on September 26, 2026, that it had been awarded a Letter of Acceptance to provide private MPLS VPN connectivity in various bandwidths and TPaaS services supporting HD video conferencing across CMPDI’s headquarters, six regional offices, ERP data center, and disaster recovery site. The total order, valued at Rs 21,57,48,840 (about Rs 21.57 crore including tax), is set for execution through October 6, 2031, and was received on September 25 at 7:05 pm.

While modest in comparison to RailTel’s overall size, the CMPDI order adds to the company’s growing portfolio of recurring, government-linked telecom projects. The estimated annualized value of the contract is approximately Rs 4.3 crore before taxes, representing about 0.18 percent of RailTel’s Rs 11,747 crore order book reported by the Chairman and Managing Director during the July 31 earnings call. The company also stated that this is a domestic order with no involvement of promoters or related-party transactions.

The announcement comes at a time when RailTel’s financial performance shows a mix of growth and margin pressures. For the quarter ended June 2026 (Q1 FY27), RailTel reported a 20.09 percent year-on-year increase in revenue from operations to Rs 893.27 crore from Rs 743.81 crore in the previous year’s quarter, though this marked a sequential decline of 46.47 percent from Rs 1,668.86 crore in the fourth quarter. Project Work Services contributed nearly 60 percent of revenue in Q1 FY27 but operated at a segment margin of around 4.5 percent, while Telecom Services accounted for 40.39 percent of revenue with a segment margin of 19.2 percent. Net profit for the quarter was Rs 65.78 crore, marginally lower by 0.48 percent compared to the same period last year, due in part to a non-cash, reversible exceptional item of Rs 7.04 crore. Basic earnings per share slipped 0.49 percent to Rs 2.05.

The fresh CMPDI contract closely follows a period in which the company’s National Long Distance (NLD) revenue slipped to Rs 144 crore from Rs 151 crore a year prior, as management cited delays in customer renewals and purchase order finalizations. In this context, the assurance of recurring revenue from a new telecom contract provides a measure of stability, aiding RailTel’s efforts to maintain a balanced revenue mix and support its FY27 project revenue target of Rs 3,500 crore.

RailTel’s addressable market continues to expand as India’s public sector pushes for digital governance, data sovereignty, and secure network infrastructure. Demand for reliable, private connectivity in areas such as mining, railways, defense, and education remains robust, driven by government digital initiatives and cloud adoption. Management recently noted rising demand from private players seeking fibre capacity and projected annual data centre revenues at around Rs 300 crore.

On Monday, shares of RailTel Corporation of India closed down 1.54 percent at Rs 256.15 apiece. The stock registered an intraday high of Rs 265.30 after opening at Rs 264.10, before dropping to a low of Rs 255.05. The company’s market capitalization currently stands at Rs 8,220.84 crore. Despite pricing pressures in core telecom services and delayed government payments, the company’s strategy of capturing recurring, service-linked contracts like CMPDI’s is expected to strengthen its performance amid India’s ongoing digital infrastructure transition.
