Mutual fund investors invest through a systematic investment plan (SIP) or lump sum. Capital gains made in both ways are taxed as short-term and long-term capital gains. Short-term capital gains are taxed at a 15% rate, while long-term capital gains are taxed at 10%. One gets Rs 1 lakh tax relaxation on long-term capital gains. Beyond those gains, they have to pay a 10 per cent tax.
