The government has no plans to reduce the 15% import duty on gold, as it has been a major source of revenue for the country with expected gold imports of 800 tonnes in 2023-24. The increase in duty has also helped curb smuggling activities. However, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council has requested a reduction in import duty on gold bars and silver bars to improve working capital.
