China's stock markets have been on a downward trend since early 2021 and one of the indices, CSI 300, fell to a five-year low on February 2, 2023. Over three years, nearly $7-trillion of shareholder wealth is estimated to have been wiped out. The securities market regulator and the government have rushed in to arrest this fall with tighter regulations and support from state-controlled funds.
