Debt mutual funds are preferred by investors for exposure to fixed income assets due to tax efficiency. However, new income tax laws from April 2023 will change the taxation on mutual fund units. Pure debt funds will now come under short-term capital gains regime with applicable income tax slab rates. To counter this, investors can consider arbitrage and equity savings funds.
